The corrected bromide space (extracellular volume) in the newborn.

چکیده
M EANS OF MEASURING the changes in dis tribution of fluid within body com partments of the newborn and older infant are needed. Determination of the bromide space has proven to be a simple and accu rate method of delineating one of these com partments, the approximate extracellular space. We have utilized this method to de termine the extracellular volume of normal newborns during the first day of life. It is hoped that thisstudy will prove a useful baseline for work in abnormal states of hy dration in the newborn. These abnormal states include the infant born of the diabetic mother, where edema

Extracellular fluid in individual tissues and in whole animals: the distribution of radiosulfate and radiobromide.
Radiosulfate, (35)SO(4), and radiobromide, (82)Br, were administered simultaneously to rats and dogs. In rats, the apparent volume of distribution of (82)Br averaged 30% of body weight and was constant between 0.5 and 35 hr after injection. The apparent volume of distribution of (35)SO(4), corrected for urinary loss, increased by 6% body weight/hr: the extrapolated volume at zero time was 88% o...
متن کاملWeight minus extracellular fluid as metabolic reference standard in newborn baby.
Bhakoo, 0. N., and Scopes, J. W. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 483. Weight minus extracellular fluid as metabolic reference standard in newborn baby. In 51 babies of differing size and gestational age, rates of oxygen consumption and corrected bromide space (as a measure of extracellular fluid) were measured. The results are used to examine the concept that weight minus extracel...
متن کاملExtracellular fluid and total body water changes in neonates undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
After being placed on extracorporeal life support (ECLS), newborn patients typically weight 5% to 30% more than their birthweight. Recovery and eventual decannulation from ECLS is associated with a return to baseline weight or birthweight values after a pronounced diuresis. It has been assumed that the increases in weight in these patients are due to increases in extracellular fluid (ECF) and t...
متن کاملA Model of the Respiratory System in the Newborn Infant
A dynamic mathematical model is presented which successfully simulates the respiratory control system of the newborn infant in different physiological conditions. The primary objective in constructing this model has been to provide a simulation aid in the investigation of maturation of the respiratory system, and the respiratory disorders during the newborn period, without the need for invasive...
متن کاملMeasuring the size of the extracellular fluid space using bromide, iohexol, and sodium dilution.
There is a need to find methods to assess the size of the extracellular fluid (ECF) volume without involving radioactive tracers. For this purpose, we applied 3 methods for measuring the ECF volume in 10 male volunteers (mean age, 34 yr). Steady-state plasma bromide concentration (control) was compared to the results of kinetic analysis of plasma iohexol and to kinetic analysis of the dilution ...
